Building a city of welcome, safety and hope for all
Building a city of welcome, safety and hope for all
Our Hero – Layla Ismail
We nominated Layla Ismail as our hero. Layla has worked tirelessly in Bristol to make the city a more welcoming place. She is the Development Manager of Refugee Women of Bristol, an incredible charity which works in solidarity with women seeking sanctuary.
She is also a prominent anti-FGM activist. She empowers and inspires, embodying the goal of Peace and Justice.
What can I do?
There are so many things that people can do to help to achieve Peace and Justice in our city. Unfortunately, policy is becoming increasingly more hostile towards those seeking sanctuary and the New Plan for Immigration directly threatens the right to seek asylum. We urge people to raise their voices against the proposals and to stand in solidarity when members of our community are threatened with deportation. We also encourage people to see beyond labels and instead recognise our shared humanity.
Specifically, we have created a list of actions you can take to make Bristol a more welcoming place for people seeking sanctuary here. You can also sign up to our monthly newsletter, which gives details of campaigns and events happening in your City of Sanctuary.
About the Nominating Organisation – Bristol City of Sanctuary
All of us at Bristol City of Sanctuary are honoured to be representing the goal of Peace and Justice. Bristol was officially launched as a City of Sanctuary ten years ago, marking the commitment of individuals, businesses and organisations to building a city of welcome, safety and hope for all.
We recognise the immense contribution that people seeking sanctuary make to our city, and continue to work hard to make sure all those people fleeing war, persecution, violence and the impact of the climate crisis get the sanctuary they deserve.
Goal 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Our Hero is working towards Global Goal 15. This Goal aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
