Tackling the causes and effects of poverty

Our Hero – Nick Ballard

We nominated Nick Ballard from ACORN who we have known since his days as a Community Organiser in our neighbourhood. Nick has grown ACORN into a national force to be reckoned with, championing issues that make a real difference.

ACORN’s campaigns tackle both the causes and effects of poverty and help those struggling with unfair landlords and evictions. They are the people’s union.

What can I do?

We can all do our bit to end poverty and to campaign for the changes needed which will make a difference. Poverty is not inevitable and should not be a fact of life for so many in the UK in 2021. You can read more about what can be done in this fantastic report from Joseph Rowntree Foundation here: We can solve poverty in the UK | JRF

About the nominator- Eastside Community Trust

At Eastside Community Trust we witness daily how poverty creates an unequal world and the impact that has day to day. We work with communities in Easton and Lawrence Hill in Bristol to create change in our neighbourhood. Our vision is a place of possibility for everyone. To us, that possibility should mean a chance to live without hunger, without constant worry about how to pay the next bill and with a safe roof over your head.

We work to offer free, welcoming and inclusive play space for children – over 60% of whom live in income deprived households in parts of our neighbourhood. Our work is about challenging that start to life and breaking the cycle of poverty by giving children the space, freedom and opportunity to grow, flourish and thrive.

We also focus on civic participation and bringing people together to connect and create locally-led solutions to problems, empowering social action through asset based community development. We run and manage Easton Community Centre, Felix Road Adventure Playground and Up Our Street magazine – free community assets which enable local people to be informed, connected and empowered.
