About this resource
This 12-minute-long film portrays two women who lost their jobs in garment-making factories. Siti, who was working at the Kahoindah factory received her severance pay after a long legal battle and a public campaign that pushed Nike to take a responsibility. Murni is less fortunate, as after she lost her job at the Jaba Garmindo factory, Uniqlo’s major supplier, she and 2,000 co-workers still fight to receive their pay. The film shows the contrast between the two women’s lives and how lack of reponsibility from giant fashion brands can leave people struggle to survive.
Why we recommend this resource
The stories are a powerful example of problems in the fashion industry that have been excacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many large fashion brands have cancelled their orders causing smaller factories to land in financial difficulties, unable to pay their workers. This is an insightful resource that highlights how lack of corporate social responsibility can threaten people’s livelihood and how unjust the fashion industry can be.
